Next stop on the road to 50 is 1971! Five years old this year and starting to make memories. As America discovered Archie Bunker and continued to struggle with the Vietnam War, I discovered Cher and Disney. Lucky for me, my maternal grandmother lived in Orlando, so trips to the new Disney World were common.

Salt Lake Opening Ceremony Entertainment
I have danced classical ballet, and also have done square dancing and contra dancing…totally different feelings, but both very loved. I had both disciplined and rewarding times, and loads of fun with friends. I always loved skating, but was never able to begin to master that….hats off to those who were!! The Olympic spirit will never die.
Thank you for your service to our country. May you rest in peace.
This was all beautifully done; but I’m amazed they couldn’t get Eric Heiden to participate….he won all his races at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid; 5 gold medals. I guess not impressive enough?!?
I actually have a hat and scarf from the 1980 Winter Olympics. Somebody found an entire cache of them in some farmhouse, and they sold them online. I purchased the hat and scarf set last year and they are in pristine condition.
I actually had the honor of meeting Mike Ramsay, who played for my hometown NHL team, the Buffalo Sabres.
No doubt, one of the most exciting times of my life….those two weeks here in Salt Lake. We had visitors, one a friend from Taiwan, and the other a relative of roommates, who came to volunteer.
Hands down, the best group to raise the torch!
how much did the mormons pay the ioc for these games!
eric heiden should of been part of this
A truly American sports tradition. Commentators who never shut up.
Salt Lake City wants to host again....... but how would they ever top that torch lighting?
Too bad "Team USA" pissed their legacy away buy supporting T****
I remember that morning my radio station had a sports show and we were talking about this very topic and I said I had a hunch as it hadn’t been announced. I thought it was going to be Mike Eurozionie due to his being the captain of the 1980 Hockey team. I was part right though.
This was by far the best voice-over work of Costas' career. And of course McKay was legendary as always.
USA USA USA USA USA USA 🇺🇸!!!!!!!!
It's been 21 years since then.
It was nice to see Jim McKay back on an Olympic Broadcast after doing so many for ABC Sports
This and Ali in 96 were very awe inspiring
Proud to be from Utah. What a defining moment this was in our state's history
The 1980 Olympic Hockey Team was pure genius. I met Mike Ramsey when he played for the Buffalo Sabres,
Wait a minute, did they literally just show the ending podium picture results of the gymnastic team competition before they even aired it?? OUCH! (When this aired it showed mid afternoon and not primetime, ahead of schedule and I missed this broadcast as I was out. Was so upset I missed it.)
No, they didn't. Whoever posted this probably cut the competition footage and replaced it with these photos to avoid a copyright claim. I have this broadcast and the opening looks nothing like this.
Jim McKay R.I.P
This is cool :-)
You couldn't find a better crew to light the olympic torch in 2002! Definitely a winning line up! Especially touching Mike Eruzione with, THE 1980 team giving a "This one's for you Coach Herb Brooks!" at the 5:50 mark
One problem with your thought, Herb Brooks was still alive, AND he was the head coach of the US men’s hockey team in the 2002 Olympics.

1980 USA hockey team got to lite The salt lake city cauldron
20 years ago tonight, this happened in my hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah. and only a few months after the 9/11 attacks. Would/should the Olympics be held? Oh yes. Such memories. Still gives me chills. Beautifully done!
Good to see your city hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, I still have fond memories of that games. One of the highlights that I remember is the figure skating events, with the scandal in the pairs event, with USA's Sarah Hughes winning the Olympic Gold after coming from 4th place to win it since figure skating is always the marquee event of the Winter Olympics. I have many memories to think about, and the lists goes on.
What an incredible moment in sports history
Here's to Salt Lake 2030!!!
Oh my that looks so much fun
Beautiful cauldron
SLC...'30..or...'34!!
This event took place 6 months after the attacks on New York, Pa., and D.C.___still uplifting
what is the name of that music?
I know I can make it to the Olympic games, in due time.
Too bad Al Michaels didn’t work for NBC at the time…
Never listen to those who say it can't be done. They don't know what the are talking about!
I was born in June of 2002 at the U and have lived in Salt Lake ever since. I wish I could see another Winter Olympics hosted in Utah. All I have is the stories from my dad lol
My dad was the engineer in charge of the manufacturing the aluminum part of the torch! Didn’t see him a lot the fall before. We have the metal section of a torch. Its beautiful.
@Arrow Dynamics Inc. No he did not, he worked for a company outside of Seattle WA. They only worked on the individual torches. They were contracted out by Coleman Camping who was in charge of producing the torches .
Did someone forget to call Eric Heiden or...?
He refused to participate. He said can I light the cauldron, they said no we have other plans, so he goes not interested at all. Very much a jerk.
@@christianlorre I wonder what happened to him. He was humble while competing. It does seem like he regrets being so stubborn (his word).
@@jrbr549he was upstaged by tbd Hockey team😊

"Games wrapped around ceremonies of innocence may never see again". That holds soo true now in 2020.
Now it's taken over by woke and identity bullshit.
@@MrFakNo Thanks to the Republicans
Did I hear the one and only Al Michaels in here
It's a sad thing that the Dixie Chicks changed their name.

Now all we need is this clip in 16x9 ratio and in HD!
Salt Lake City what a olympics
At the time I loved that Team USA lit the cauldron. It was so special given what had happened just months before and what they meant to the country when they won the gold metal. Now seeing this same team at a Trump rally has taken part of my heart and what I believed they stood for. That team that won in 1980 was what America was about.....unity. The fact that that same team would show up at a Trump rally just rips all that away. I've lost all respect for that team and the players......and I couldn't be more disappointed. Any team that represented unity would never show up at a Trump rally.........no matter what. One of my favorite movies was Miracle and now I can't even stand to watch it.........
Snowflake
Look a liberal piece of shit Trump was the best President ever
Really, Jim's first memory of the Miracle on Ice Game was Al Michaels shouting "Eruzione scores?" Michaels had the most EPIC call in all of sports history in saying: "Do you believe in miracles? YES!" and instead his first memory is "Eruzione scores" LOL
In McKay’s defense, “Eruzione Scores” was said by Al Michaels when the goal happened, “Do you believe in miracles” came at the end of the game, so it would’ve been his first memory.
